What is Digital Abuse?

It is one we do not talk about often enough. Digital abuse in marriage is the use of technology, primarily digital devices and platforms, as a means to exert control, manipulate, intimidate, or harm one's partner within a marital or intimate relationship. It involves various forms of aggressive behaviour using technology, which can cause emotional, psychological, and sometimes even physical harm to the victim.

Examples of digital abuse in marriage can include:

1. Monitoring: Constantly checking or spying on the partner's online activities, such as their emails, text messages, social media accounts, or location tracking.

2. Stalking: Using technology to follow or track the partner's online movements, contacts, or interactions without their consent.

3. Harassment: Sending relentless and threatening messages, emails, or online posts to the partner, often with the intention of intimidating or belittling them.

4. Unauthorized access: Illegally gaining access to the partner's personal devices, online accounts, or private information without their knowledge or consent.

5. Revenge pornography: Sharing explicit or intimate photos or videos of the partner without their permission, often with the intent to humiliate or blackmail them.

6. Online defamation: Spreading false rumors or making disparaging remarks about the partner online, damaging their reputation or causing emotional distress.

Digital abuse can have serious psychological effects on the victim, leading to feelings of fear, anxiety, depression, and isolation. It is important to recognize and address digital abuse within a marriage by seeking support from friends, family, or professionals, and considering legal protections or counseling services if necessary.
