Navigating family and friends
This one for me was very painful! What do you do when you know who you live with but family and friends only see the show? This is the problem with putting a mask on! What happens when you take yours off and say there's a very big problem, but your spouse continues in denial and leaves his on? Well, nothing good is the honest answer because family and friends are understandably confused.
A couple of things you may need to be aware of:
· Some people will not agree with your decision. The truth is you know what you have been through and do not owe anyone an explanation. A relationship is not safe if it costs your health and wellbeing.
· Allow your friends and family to journey their grief and disappointment. You will quickly learn if your friends are safe people at this point because they should be very conscious of how the circumstances are affecting you first and process their feelings another time away from you. Let's face it you have more than enough to deal with and cannot take on their pain as well.
· Unfortunately, some people will take sides and even refuse to believe you. It is not your responsibility to convince anyone of the truth. In my case, my conscience was clear, and could look God in eyes without fear. Truth is truth no matter how ugly it is.
· It may take some time for people to let go of the idea of you and your spouse no longer being a couple. This was unexpected truth for me, but I quickly learned it may take time for family and friends to come to terms with the fact that we were never getting back together.
This can be very painful to navigate. As I write this I remember how lonely I felt. My message of hope is to have a support group to help you through this.
